About This Trip
Embark on a 4-day gorilla and golden monkey safari, visiting both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. Bwindi is home to nearly half of the world's endangered mountain gorillas and is the only place where wild chimpanzees co-exist with gorillas. The safari also takes you to Mgahinga National Park, where you can trek the Nyakagezi gorilla family, known for staying in a narrow home range due to the abundance of food. Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Depart Kampala early in the morning for the long but spectacular drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south-western Uganda. The journey takes you through the rolling hills of Kabale, tea plantations and the crater-lake district, arriving at your lodge in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner and an evening briefing from your naturalist guide on gorilla trekking etiquette and what to expect the following day. Overnight at Gorilla Hills Eco Lodge or similar.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point where rangers assign you to a habituated gorilla family. Trek through the ancient montane rainforest — altitude ranges from 1,160 to 2,607 metres — following trackers until you locate the gorilla family. You are permitted one magical hour in close proximity to observe silverbacks, playful juveniles, and nursing mothers in their natural habitat. Return to the lodge for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Overnight at Bwindi or Mgahinga.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking at Mgahinga
Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where the endangered golden monkey — found only in the Virunga volcanic range — makes its home in bamboo forest on the slopes of Mount Gahinga. After a ranger briefing, head into the forest to track a habituated troop. Spend up to an hour watching the strikingly coloured monkeys leap through bamboo fronds as they forage and socialise. The afternoon can include a visit to a Batwa indigenous community to learn about their ancestral forest culture. Overnight near Mgahinga.
Day 4: Return to Kampala
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with views of the Virunga volcanoes before beginning the return drive to Kampala. Stop along the way at Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa's deepest and most scenic lakes, for a short boat excursion and lunch on the water. Continue to Kampala, arriving by evening. Your driver-guide will transfer you to your hotel or to Entebbe airport for onward travel.
